PermitsPros is a California and nationwide permit expediting firm specializing in building permits and fire protection. Since 2008. The SPSRL is the speaker strobe our desk files most; this page pairs its specs with its listing path and its permit path.
The device, from the manufacturer's data sheet
The SPSRL is System Sensor's L-Series indoor wall-mount speaker strobe — the voice-evacuation notification appliance that combines a fire alarm speaker with a xenon strobe in one housing. Source: System Sensor data sheet AVDS866-03, "L-Series Speakers and Speaker Strobes" (with the plain-model ordering lines in AVDS87102).
- Strobe: field-selectable candela — 15, 30, 75, 95, 110, 135, 185 cd (wall-mount table; ceiling models publish a different list)
- Speaker: field-selectable taps — 1/4, 1/2, 1, and 2 W by rotary switch; dual-voltage 25 / 70.7 Vrms; published frequency range 400–4,000 Hz; published sound output at 10 ft rises with the tap (79 dBA at 1/4 W to 88 dBA at 2 W, speaker values)
- Power: regulated 16 to 33 V for the strobe circuit at 24 V nominal
- Model family: SPSRL (wall, red, FIRE marking) · SPSRL-P (plain — no FIRE marking) · SPSWL / SPSWL-P (white) · SPSCRL / SPSCWL (ceiling mount) · the weatherproof line is a separate set of models
- National listings (per data sheet): the speaker is listed to UL 1480, and the speaker-strobe combination to UL 1480 and UL 1971; UL listing S4048, FM approved
The California listing path
The SPSRL's California listing is CSFM 7320-1653:0505, category 7320 — Speakers: the State Fire Marshal's listing sheet names the SPSRL, SPSRL-P, and SPSRL-SP expressly, at the published ratings (25 or 70.7 VAC; 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2 watt outputs). The trap this page exists to prevent: the same family's strobes and horn strobes carry CSFM 7125-1653:0504 — a different number for a different device. A speaker strobe files under the speaker listing. BML listings carry expiry dates, so the sheet in the package is the current one, pulled at submittal time.
What the submittal package needs for this device
- The L-Series data sheet (AVDS866-03) showing the candela and tap tables
- The current CSFM listing sheet 7320-1653:0505 for the exact model and variant
- A device schedule on the plans: every speaker strobe with its candela setting and its wattage tap — the reviewer reconciles the schedule against the cutsheet tables
- Battery and voltage-drop calculations covering the notification circuits at the filed settings
- The voice-evacuation context where the design changed — zones and amplifier loading; see the speaker strobe permit page
The permit path
Speaker strobes ride the project's fire alarm permit, reviewed by the fire prevention division or district. Adds, moves, and design changes are reviewed work; exact like-for-like replacement may be minor in some jurisdictions — it varies by jurisdiction. PermitsPros assembles the package, files it, carries corrections, and delivers the issued permit: $250 filing service or $495 complete package; city and district fees separate. Start at portal.permitspros.com or call (888) 907-9511.
Spec facts on this page are drawn from the manufacturer's own published data sheet, cited by document number. Listing numbers are checked at submittal time — California listings expire and are revised, and reviewers ask for the current sheet.
Questions and answers
Q: What are the SPSRL's candela and speaker tap settings?
A: From System Sensor's L-Series data sheet (AVDS866-03): the wall-mount strobe is field-selectable at 15, 30, 75, 95, 110, 135, and 185 candela, and the speaker is field-selectable at 1/4, 1/2, 1, and 2 watts, for 25 or 70.7 Vrms systems. (The ceiling-mount models publish a different candela list — do not mix the two.) Those published tables are what a reviewer checks the device schedule against — the settings on the plans must exist on the cutsheet.
Q: What do the SPSRL suffixes and siblings mean?
A: SPSRL is the wall-mount, red, FIRE-marked model. SPSRL-P is the plain version with no FIRE marking on the cover; SPSWL and SPSWL-P are the white versions; SPSCRL and SPSCWL are the ceiling-mount versions. The marking and the mount are different models appearing by name on the listing — a submittal that files the wall model's sheet for a ceiling device, or the marked sheet for a plain device, will be corrected.
Q: What is the SPSRL's California SFM listing?
A: CSFM 7320-1653:0505 — category 7320, Speakers — confirmed on the manufacturer's data sheet and the State Fire Marshal's listing sheet, whose design list names the SPSRL, SPSRL-P, and SPSRL-SP at 25 or 70.7 VAC with 1/4, 1/2, 1, and 2 watt outputs. Note the trap: the L-Series strobes and horn strobes in the same family carry a different CSFM number (7125-1653:0504). A speaker strobe files under the speaker listing, not the strobe listing — filing the family's strobe sheet for a speaker strobe is a real correction. Per the data sheet, the combination is listed to UL 1480 and UL 1971.
Q: When does SPSRL work need a permit?
A: New, added, moved, or re-specified speaker strobes are fire alarm permit work; changes to the voice evacuation design behind them (zones, amplifiers, messages) take plan review. An exact like-for-like swap — identical model, identical candela and tap — may be minor work in some jurisdictions. The full rules are on our speaker strobe permit page.
